The study aims to evaluate the natural protected areas within the Southern
Carpathians/ Transylvanian Alps from the point of view of the conservation efficacity of
natural forest and non-forest natural landscapes (alpine meadows, rocks, subalpine bushes).
GIS software allowed for a GAP analysis for every mountain unit and for each group of natural
habitats that are found within the study area.
It was noticed that the elements with limited spreading (caves, gorges, lakes, phosiliferous
deposits, forest with high conservation value and small areas) have a better status, being under
the umbrella of the network of protected areas, while the forest ecosystems (seminatural forests),
subalpine buches, rocks and alpine meadows are less protected, with important differences
from one mountain unit to another.
The study highlights the discrepancies that appear among the units of the Transylvanian Alps
in including the forest and non-forest areas under protection areas from the 1st to the 5th
IUCN categories and Natura 2000 sites, proposing compensation measures for the areas with
disfunctionalities.
It is argued in favour of the enlargement of protected area network, especially natural
reserves within the territories which were identified following GAP analysis as having little
or no protection areas, the necessity of inner zonation for large Natura 2000 sites within the
Carpathians, by emphasizing some areas for integral protectin and buffer areas (areas for
sustainable conservation/sustainable management area) as an effective conservation tool for
the natural landscapes within the Carpathians.
