where he will also hold the position of Head of Section. Another administrative function was also
Director of the Orsova Geological Survey Station (1975 - 1979).
He obtained a doctorate in 1962 at the Babeş-Bolyai University of Cluj, with a doctoral
dissertation aiming not only at the geo-economic study of ,,Oaşului Country”, as well as aspects of
physical geography treated with the same accuracy; the work was published in 1964. He graduated as
an university teacher, first at the Didactic Training Institute (1965 - 1968); and from 1970 until 1998 as
a lecturer and associate professor at the University of Bucharest, and as a consultant professor since
1998. Since 1990 he has founded the Faculty of Geography of Tourism in Sibiu, leading this institution
until 2018 as a dean, and as the prorector the ,,Dimitrie Cantemir” University (since 2003). The
Faculty gained an international openness by working with specialists from France, Italy, Great Britain,
USA, Japan, etc. From the gates of this institution came thousands of specialists who occupied and still
have various positions: travel agents, teachers, research, administration.
He becomes a member of the International Geography Union in 1964 in the Commission on
Changing Rural Systems. At the international level he participates in numerous international symposia
with a geographical specificity: Maribor (1969), Verona (1970), Szeged (1972), Barcelona (1983),
Paris (1984 - 1986), Trieste (1988), Ottawa (2000), etc.
He organized 14 National Symposia of Agrarian Geography: Piteşti (1972), Sinaia (1976),
Târgovişte (1981), Târgu Mureş (1983), Râmnicu Vâlcea (1986), Orşova (1989), Sibiu (1997 and
1999). He also participated in the organization of 4 Congresses of the Society of Geography of
Romania (1984, 1988, 1992, 1997) and "The 100th Anniversary of the Founding of the SGR" (1975),
as vice-president of the professional organization which represents the geographers (a function held
from 1968 until 1991).
He has published over 160 works and articles, as well as numerous textbooks, courses,
treatises, whether as sole author, coordinator or collaborator. Among these are worth mentioning:
Geography of Romania (Volumes II, III, IV), Monograph of the Danube Valley, Geographical
Encyclopedia of Romania, Geography of Romania's Agriculture, Getic Piedmont, Dobrogea Plateau,
etc. Equally numerous and important were the maps: Land Use Map (Budapest, 1978), Atlas of the
Danube Countries (Vienna, 1989), Economic Map of Romania (printed in 6 editions), World Energy
Map, Geographic Atlas of Sibiu County .
A confirmation of the importance of the results of his work is concretized by the granting in
1987 of the ,,Gheorghe Murgoci” award by the highest scientific forum of our country: the Romanian
Academy; with numerous prizes and diplomas, both national and international.
